Two defendants who appeared in court charged with assaulting another man and being armed with a homemade weapon will return before Judge Bernadette Owens in September.

Johnny Myers (56) and Christy Myers (23) both of 1 Grange Crescent, Mullingar, Westmeath came before Longford District Court on weapons and assault charges. Both defendants were represented by solicitor Brid Mimnagh.

Judge Owens was told both men were charged with assault causing harm to another man and possessing a homemade walking stick with a sharply pointed blade during the course of a violent public order incident on March 28 last.

Inspector Paddy McGirl told the court that there are a number of other individuals “yet to be arrested” in connection with the incident.

Judge Owens asked if the prosecution would like her to note if there was liberty to re-enter the matter, however Inspector McGirl said because there are strict bail conditions in place: “If there are any breaches we can arrest them on those.”

The judge adjourned the matter to September 19.
