Longford senator keeps spotlight on N4 upgrade plans

Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy has called on politicians and various stakeholders to redouble efforts following a special meeting in Leinster House amid fears Longford's long awaited N4 bypass upgrade could end up “being shelved again”.

At the meeting representatives from Chambers of Commerce from around the North West and local businesses highlighted worries that the lack of investment in the road would damage economic expansion in the region.

Senator Carrigy said ongoing delays linked to the project was beginning to hinder inward investment into the county.

“Businesses looking at potentially locating themselves in the region are pointing at the fact that they don't have access to a safe and speedy access to our capital city, ports and airports,” he said.

The former Longford County Council cathaoirleach said the need to ring-fence capital monies to underpin the project was inescapable.

“I want the funding put in place in 2023 to keep the consultants on board and to continue the process to planning permission stage so we can lock in a defined route with planning.”
