There have been calls for additional car parking space to be provided at Derrycassin Wood in Mullinalaghta

The State's forestry company Coillte is facing calls to enter into talks with local authority officials to provide additional car parking space at one of north Longford's busiest tourism locations.

Fianna Fáil Cllr PJ Reilly, speaking at last week's Granard Municipal District meeting, said parking concerns at Derrycassin Woods in Mullinalaghta had become progressively worse in recent weeks.

Cllr Reilly, who was joined in his calls by Independent Cllr Turlough McGovern, explained how the situation was likely to be exacerbated further as the brighter evenings kick in over the next number of months.

“The place down there can get very crowded and especially so when there is a football match on,” he said, referencing how the wood was adjacent to the home of Mullinalaghta St Columba's GFC.

“There can be between 20 to 25 cars there on a match day. The GAA having no extra ground, all that can be done is obtain an extra acre or two from Coillte,” the Fianna Fáil councillor said.

Cllr McGovern supported those sentiments, saying some motorists had resorted to parking their cars on the road at peak times.

It's now expected that a letter to that effect will be sent to Coillte over the comimg days by the local authority.
