As weekends go, last Sunday will live long in the memory as thousands of spectators descended on Granard for the 87th staging of Co Longford's Ploughing Championships.
It was an occasion that illustrated the finer subtelties of rural life as onlookers of all ages experienced an agricultural showcase that not only reached, but exceeded the expectations of its small band of dedicated volunteers.
“It was an absolutely mighty day,” said an exuberant ploughing chairman Barry White.
“It really couldn't have gone any better.”
Fresh from those buoyant remarks, attention now turns to April 15 (8pm) and more specifically Abbeylara Parish Centre for the much anticipated 'Queen of the Plough' dance with all proceeds to St Christopher's.
