Bríd Shaughnessy and Paul Kelly are set to head up a vast array of top class live entertainment at this Sunday's Longford Ploughing Championships
All of the attention on Sunday might be on the ploughing, but away from that there will be plenty of eye-catching entertainment in store to keep the pulses racing.
Taking centre stage will be Donegal country music singer Paul Kelly and his band who, along with Bríd Shaughnessy of TG4 Glór Tíre fame.
The pair are among a long line of top class entertainment organisers have pencilled in for this Sunday’s ploughing championships.
Donegal trucker and part time farmer Paul, together with his five piece band are first on stage with his 'Cut the Grass' and farming style of country music.
Brid, who made it to the semi-finals of the TG4 country and Irish music series, is another star attraction that committee members have managed to add to the day’s action packed itinerary.
Aisling Rynn, Peter Costello and John Dungan CCE,meanwhile, will also perform live over the course of the afternoon.
Add in Dance professionals A&C Country Jiving, who will liven up the outdoor dancefloor with one to one tutoring as well as a jiving competition and it’s not hard to see why there is such excitement ahead of this Sunday’s competition.
Paul admitted that while he was never previously at a ploughing championships in Longford, said he was looking forward immensely to unveiling a number of farming themed songs.
“We are farmers at home and have been farming all our lives,” he said.
“I have written all of them myself with my neighbour, Andy Cox. One of them is called ‘On the Market’ another is called ‘Cut the Grass’ and so on.”
There are 15 such tracks in total, among which includes one about lambing.
“The reason that we were able to write these songs is because I have been through all of this myself when it comes to farming, all of the good parts and bad parts.”
Paul and Brid will join Thomas Hynes of RTÉ Operation Transformation fame for a bit of real live celebrity ploughing supervised by Farmer Phil.
Anyone keen for a little exercise can join Thomas for a walkabout at the biggest County Ploughing event this spring.
It will have acres of space with the full rollout of Ploughing, Exhibitions, Trade Stalls, Dog Show and family entertainment.
