Granard man says car was being used for the bog

A north Longford man fined for having no NCT on his car has told a court he only had been using the vehicle to collect turf from a nearby bog.

Thomas Reilly, 22 Colmcille Terrace, Granard pleaded guilty after being stopped by gardaí at Rathcronin, Granard on June 26 2018. He was also charged with having no tax in place at Market Street, Granard on July 16 2018.

“I just had the car for use at the bog and I shouldn’t have had it on the road,” said Mr Reilly, in his defence.

In revealing he only had the car for two months at the time of being stopped, Judge Seamus Hughes said it was no different from driving to and from the local mart.

In each instance, Judge Hughes fined Mr Reilly €150, giving him three months to pay.

“It’s (car) gone to the scrapyard since,” added Mr Reilly.
