Voters out and about in Edgeworthstown have their say on General Election 2024

With just days to go the 20 candidates with their name on the ballot paper will be looking to sway voters to their side to secure one of the five seats on offer in the 2024 Longford Westmeath constituency.

The combined population of the two counties is 142,972, last time out the quota to get elected was 11,277.

Six candidates: Sorca Clarke, Joe Flaherty, Peter Burke, Robert Troy, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran and Micheál Carrigy had over 6,000 votes after the first count in 2020. All six have their names on the ballot paper this year.
It took ten counts and transfers before the returning officer confirmed the four TDs the people of Longford Westmeath chose from the field of 15 candidates.

With an extra seat up for grabs this time around Longford candidates will hope to increase their representation, however there's hot competition from the 20 contenders.

One of the interesting factors in the election is the return of 19 electoral divisions from Meath East to the constituency. With three of the sitting TDs, (Clarke, Burke and Troy) from the Mullingar area the additional 9,500 odd votes from that general direction may assist them in their bid to retain their seats.

Ultimately this will be up to the electorate and The Longford Leader spoke to a number of voters at the Community Safety & Wellbeing Expo in Edgeworthstown to get their take on the election.
