Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath Deputy Peter Burke.
Fine Gael will fund the recruitment of 6,000 new Gardaí if re-elected, through a double training allowance and a Garda Retention Payment, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke TD has announced.
Other commitments include expanding the Garda Reserve by 3,000 members, improving Garda training facilities, upgrading Garda stations nationwide, strengthening the Criminal Assets Bureau, and rolling out body-worn cameras and Facial Recognition Technology.
“Fine Gael is committed to enhancing community safety by tackling crime and supporting local policing efforts,” said Minister Burke.
“We will publish a new Rural Safety Plan, establish Community Safety Partnerships, and increase the Community Safety Fund to €12 million.”
The Longford Westmeath TD added: “We will also ensure adequate prison capacity by building a new prison at Thornton Hall and adding 1,500 spaces to existing facilities. This will be supported by the recruitment of additional prison officers and health staff to create a safer environment for both staff and inmates. Measures to reduce reoffending and support rehabilitation will also be prioritised.”
