Longford slashers: The Annual General Meeting of the club took place in the clubhouse on Saturday 19th. January. Nominations and motions were discussed and the following officers were elected to guide the club for 2013. President: Hal Carey. Board Delegates: John Murphy, Seamus McRory and Seamus Lee; ASAP/Childrens officer: Damien Bartley. The first club meeting of the year takes place in the clubhouse on Wednesday January 30th. It is intended that all monthly club meetings will take place on the last Wednesday night of the month.
Clonguish: On Saturday night last our White Collar Boxing Night took place in the PJ Murphy Sports Hall. It will go down as one of the best nights entertainment had by the club in many’s a year. A huge crowd turned up on the night with 700 people packing the hall. All boxers fought superbly on the night and they cheered on from from every angle by the frenzied crowd. Great credit must go to all the boxers who showed great bravey and no little skill to serve up nine great bouts. The committee who organised the event are also thanked for their efforts as the event ran smoothly and was a great success. The orgainising committee would like to thank Gerry Rehill, Barry Kilemeade, Noel Murhpy, Ciaran Smyth, Mark Casey, Eoin Kilemeade for their help in training, refereeing and judging the contests on the night. Our thanks to Lanesboro Boxing Club for the use of their ring and help also. Thanks to Kilglass Gales for their help in putting up the ring also. John Duffy MC contributed greatly to the night with his commentary and we hear Don King is head hunting him after Saturday night. All fighters on the night brought great support with them and it was great to see so many from the Colmcille, Mostrim and Slashers clubs supporting their fighters on the night. On the playing field for 2013 Gerry Mckeon and Barney Murtagh are taking charge of the Juniors and training will commence shortly. Any players interested in dusting the boots off and making the comeback are welcome to resume training Tuesday and Friday evenings in McGee Park. At the recent executive meeting it was decided that in order to raise required funds for urgently needed maintenance of the club playing field that the Colmcille CFC 100 Club be established. The goal is to raise €5000 that will be specifically spent on the maintenance of the field. This maintenance is required to restore and improve the quality of the pitch. €100 euro tickets will be available which will entitle the bearer to enter a draw for €500 and also free club membership, which automatically enters you into the draw for All-Ireland tickets later on in the year. We would urge all Gaels in the parish to participate in this vital fundraiser. It will be for the longterm benefit of the club and all teams who use the pitch throughout the year. While the tickets are expensive we ask you to consider it an investment in the club. Various purchasing options are available: a family could come together to buy a ticket, or four friends or neighbours in order to spread the cost. Bornacoola: Congratulations Charlotte Our congratulations to Ladies player Charlotte Faughnan who was named Leitrim Intermediate Club Player of the year and received her award at a function in the Bush Hotel on Friday night last. Charlotte was a key player in the centre of the field in 2012 as the Ladies team captured the club’s first ever Intermediate championship. Scór na nOg For the second year in a row, our Question time team of Robert Beirne, Brian Duffy and Sean Muldowney were defeated by 2 points in the Connaught final of Scór na nOg which was held on Saturday last in Castlebar. Sean Connollys: Sunday number 4 has arrived and still great numbers turning out for the early walk. Just imagine we are half way there and boy how the fitness levels have increased. We have three Monday Boot camps left, January 28, tomorrow , February 4 and 11 at 8 o’clock each night. There is also three sessions of aerobics on Thursday nights – January 31 and February 7 and 14 so please keep the numbers up for these enjoyable exercises. There is a great buzz in the parish about these events and a great response to sponsorship. Hopefully all cards will be collected by next weekend at the latest. At the weekend weigh-in the craic was really good, especially with the conversion of kgs to lbs: some lost, some gained but all went home happy and determined to work harder over the last three weeks. So a million thanks to one and all for your participation. Score encore: During the past few weeks our Scor na nOg figure dancing team has been selected to take part in round eight of this competition. These girls were in a contest with teams from Leitrim , Cavan, Roscommon and on merit are off to RTE studios in Dublin on Wednesday,February 6 to take part in round 8. What a great achievement ! Ballymahon Leo Caseys: Congratulations to new Leinster champions Longford Vocational Schools team who scored a magnificent victory over reigning Leinster champions Kildare at Pairc Chiaran, Cashel on Friday last. This was truly a team effort, the team including all players on the panel, mentors, coaching team and sponsors. Well done to the management of Cashel GAA on providing the perfect setting for the final in front of a very large attendance. Special mention must go to local lads Andrew Farrell, Fergus Farrell, Paddy Farrell, Gary Kenny, Shane Kenny, Rory Connor, Martain McGoey, John Reed and Niall Sheehy. Sandra Earley Memorial Run: This run will take place on February 24th around the Kilclare/Kiltubrid area in memory of the late Sandra Earley. Sandra was a young mother at the age of 26 years of age; she had three beautiful kids & her whole life in front of her when she died suddenly nearly a year ago. Her boyfriend was of course Barry Lupton who played underage football with the club in the past when he was younger. Tang: There was a medal presentation for the maryland-tang u21 championship winning team in Cooney’s hotel Ballymahon on Friday night 25th. The squad their family and friends all attended .M.C for the night was former co. chairman Tom Farrell and the medals were awarded by the new co. chairman Sean Sheridan. Both club chairmen said a few words with team mentors Paul Conway and Padraig Connell being praised for their hard work in the months before and during the competiton. They in turn praised the players on their dedication and work rate.Tang chairman Damian Gill said there was a direct connection between under age coaching down through the years in the maryland-tang club and this teams success and encouraged both clubs to continue that great work. A great night was held by all. A special thanks to Sean Sheridan , Tom Farrell, Mick Cooney and the staff in Cooney’s hotel. Scholarships to the Gaeltacht - Longford county board are offering a limited number of grants to students who wish to improve their knowledge of teanga na Gaeilge. Applications are invited from students who must be 13 years or older on 1st of January 2013 and each grant is 250 Euro. Application forms can be obtained from Longford GAA Website or from the county Irish and cultural officer. Application forms must be with the Irish officer before February 15th and applicants will be selected at interview during February/March. Club membership for this year is now due and can be paid to Registrar Colm Hughes. 20 Euro per adult and 10 Euro per child Important new rule that from January 1st 2013, all players playing in all grades up to and including Minor will be required to wear a mouthguard in all football games and at practice sessions. The window for preparation for the start of the U14 and U16 national competition is very small so every training session is a plus for us. All clubs please ensure your nominees for the U14 and U16 are in at these training sessions on Saturday at 9.30a.m for U14 and 10.30a.m. for U16. Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our Church Gate collections last weekend, thanks also to the clubs members who collected, it is much appreciated. The first round of the National Football League, Division 3 takes place in Sligo IT against Sligo at 2p.m. on Sunday next, Feb. 3rd. All supporters welcome. We also wish Longford GAA county team every good wish for their match against Wexford, away, also on Sunday. All clubs are asked to ensure they have their AGM’s held before Feb. 1st and all officers appointed to their board have their names sent to Victor Connell, he in turn must send them on to both Leinster Council and Croke Park. All clubs must send in their latest bank statement and financial report which are also forwarded with the AGM report. Affiliation is now due from all clubs for the year, the fee is €100 per club. Longford Ladies must affiliate in turn with both Leinster and Central Council. Clubs are asked to advise Victor Connell, Co. Sec., what competitions they hope to take part in in 2013 so the fixture competition list can be issued and published. Your co-operation in this would be very much appreciated.
Ballymore: Club membership is now due and may be paid to Francis Brennan.50 euro for players and 25 euro for students which includes insurance and 20 euro per adult or 30 euro for family membership.Its very important that all players pay this immediately.Senior scor takes place in Ballinamuck on March 1ST next and any club member available to represent the club should contact Geraldine McNerney on 0876472627 immediately.Its important that our club be well represented in senior scor and with all the great talent that’s in our area there is no reason why we cant achieve this.Training has started back on Wednesday and Saturday evenings and all players are encouraged to attend. On Wednesday evening last Killeen Dramatic Society had a Mass for all it’s deceased members and following the Mass Fr.Simon encouraged all present to revive the group and with that in mind we ask club members to think about this and perhaps we might have the group back on stage before next Christmas. Congratulations to Mattie Gorman and the Longford Vocational school team on their great win over Kildare in the Leinster Final on Friday evening last.

Rathcline Ladies: All players are asked to keep an eye on the club facebook page over the coming weeks for info on training. We hope to be back on the pitch the weekend of Feb 9th. Congratulations to the Longford VEC team on their tremendous win last weekend and a special congrats to the Rathcline and Cashel representatives on the team. We wish Claire, Lauren, Noleen and the rest of the county ladies the very best of luck next weekend as they begin their league campaign.
Legan Sarsfield: Training for the forthcoming season is well underway with large numbers attending on Tuesday, Friday evenings and Sunday mornings. Results of Lotto draw held last week in Slowey’s. Numbers drawn were 6, 12, 15 and 18.There was no jackpot winner. Match three winners of €20 were Padraig Moran, Bridger Boylan, Dan &Aor, Donald Keogh and Jim Murtagh. This week’s draw was held in Casey’s for a jackpot of €6,000.The Club extends sympathy to the Halligan Family, Ardagh and his relatives in this parish on the death of Billy last week.
