When the Longford Slashers ladies gradually realised what they had achieved after the final whistle was blown at a packed Michael Fay Park on Sunday last, there was a glorious outburst of joy as the players celebrated a magnificent win over the Mayo and Connacht champions Charlestown.

The rich reward is a Croke Park appearance in the All-Ireland Club Intermediate title decider against the Tipperary and Munster champions Mullinahone on Saturday December 10 with the big match to be broadcast live on TG4, throw-in 3pm.

Killashee native Aisling Cosgrove has led the Slashers team in her inspirational role as the team captain for the past eight years and many titles have been won in this remarkable success story.

“Getting to play at Croke Park is a dream come true. I grew up watching the big games at the National GAA Stadium and never believing that one day I would get the opportunity to line-out in an All-Ireland final at the magnificent venue.

“We have a very committed bunch of girls who have worked extremely hard to get this far. Our defence was superb when Charlestown were piling on the pressure in the closing stages of the semi-final.

“Their dangerous full-forward Deirdre Doherty was a constant threat but we closed her down at almost every opportunity in stopping her from scoring a goal that might have changed the course of the game.

“When we went seven points in front midway through the second half it left us in a strong position but Charlestown were tough opposition and kept coming back in closing the gap,” stated the delighted captain Cosgrove when she spoke to the Leader after the game.
