Beaten finalists in 2022 (v Louth) and 2024 (v Fermanagh), the Longford senior hurlers will be hoping to achieve another Croke Park final appearance when they enter the championship arena against Lancashire at the GAA Centre of Excellence in Abbottstown on Saturday, throw-in 2pm.
The task has become tougher with New York coming into the competition for the first time while no longer involved with the county is last year’s star Cian Darcy who decided to step away this season.
Other key players from the 2024 campaign will also be missing but a few newcomers are part of the current squad, most notably Martin Farrell from the Blackrock club in Limerick who is eligible to play on the parentage rule.
The eventual winners of the six-team group will qualify directly for the Lory Meagher Cup title decider with the second placed side meeting New York for the other place in the Croke Park final.
Under the guidance of their new manager, Tipperary native Diarmuid Cahill, Longford will also meet Warwickshire (home), Leitrim (away), Cavan (home) and Monaghan (away) in the championship.
