Stuck in Division 4 for the past couple of years and who are facing a third consecutive season in the basement league, the current state of Longford senior football is clearly at a low ebb.
A badly needed win over Wicklow in the opening round of the Leinster Championship at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday next (throw-in 3.30pm) will be a big boost for all concerned and hopefully a positive result will materialise.
A glamour clash at home against the dominant Leinster champions Dublin awaits the eventual winners in the quarter-final the following Sunday and that will generate a great buzz and banter regardless of the no-hoper tag.
While Wicklow cruised to a comprehensive 9-point success when the counties clashed in the National League at Aughrim earlier in the season, the new Longford manager Mike Solan will be anxious for a much closer contest on this occasion against Oisin McConville’s outfit who just missed out on promotion.
Whether the midlanders are good enough to cross the hurdle in the championship remains to be seen but home advantage is a definite plus and Longford will point to the fact that they held the eventual Division 4 champions Limerick to a draw in the opening round of the league.
