Longford footballers were celebrating a prestigious Sigerson Cup success with DCU last night (Wednesday) following the fantastic 1-16 to 3-6 win over the favourites UCD in the final at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Ballyhaunis.
Goalkeeper Eoin McGuinness (Longford Slashers) and corner-back Bryan Masterson (Abbeylara) started on the team in the university/third level colleges title decider while Sean O’Sullivan (Sean Connolly’s) was also a member of the strong DCU squad.
Lining out with UCD was James Moran (Killoe Emmet Og), who was listed among the substitutes. Moran, Masterson and O’Sullivan will be in action for Longford in the National Football League Division 4 clash against Wicklow in Aughrim on Sunday, throw-in 2pm.
In the Sigerson Cup final, the sides were all square at the break (0-6 to 1-3) but DCU dominated the second half to emerge victorious under the guidance of their boss Sean Fox who was a member of the Paddy Christie management team during his two-year reign in charge of Longford.
