On the evidence of their comfortable wins over Scoil Mhuire, Clane (Kildare) and St Joseph’s, Rochfortbridge in the group stage, St Mel’s College will be in a fairly confident frame of mind in the quest to reach the Leinster Schools Senior ‘A’ Football Championship quarter-finals.
Standing in their way are the 3-in-a-row title holders Naas CBS who crashed to a disappointing 1-11 to 1-2 defeat against St Mary’s CBS, Mullingar but the Kildare kings got back on track with a resounding victory over Ard Scoil Ris (Dublin) to reach the last eight.
A most intriguing battle is in prospect at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Tuesday next (throw-in 1pm) as St Mel’s bid to gain revenge for the defeat against Naas CBS at the semi-final stage last season.
Backboned by a few members of the Longford U-17 squad who won the Leinster minor title in such brilliant fashion this year, the Longford college are capable of crossing this tough hurdle with the potentially lethal full-forward-line of Paddy Mollaghan (St Brigid’s Killashee) and Clonguish duo James Hagan and Cormac Flynn leading the charge.
