The strongly fancied solely Junior club Grattans gradually got on top to overcome the gutsy Longford Slashers second string to win the Tier 3 Football Championship final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday.
Young Grattans . . . 2-9 Longford Slashers . . . 0-10
Fortunate to be leading by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break with their most competent keeper Reuben Murray producing no less than three excellent point-blank saves to keep his net intact, the Stonepark side eventually claimed the premier county Junior title for the 5th time.
Grattans converted a crucial penalty in the early stages of the second half with player of the match award winner Harry Mulvihill making no mistake in finding the back of the net but the game was still in the balance until the killer second goal materialised in stoppage time.
Trailing by just a couple of points, Slashers never gave up the fight but their hopes were eventually dashed when Grattans substitute Shane O’Brien flicked the ball to the net from a few yards out after connecting with the perfect pass from another replacement Eoin Kinlan close to the final whistle.
Managed by Dromard clubman Niall Vance, Grattans now turn their attention to the Leinster Club Junior Championship first round fixture away to the Wexford winners on Saturday November 2.
