Mullinalaghta have been awarded the win against Carrickedmond in the current Senior Football Championship controversy following the unanimous decision by the Longford CCC.

Thus St Columba's top the group and a subsequent change to the original quarter-finals which are fixed for next weekend.

Dromard now play Killoe in the last 8 while Carrick exit the championship but are set to lodge an appeal and a delay in the progress of the Connolly Cup is looking unavoidable.

To make matters worse for Carrickedmond, they are now scheduled to meet Longford Slashers in  an ‘extra’ relegation play-off as both clubs finished deadlock on  four points in the table and cannot be separated with their clash in the group stage ending in a draw and identical scores.

The winners play Kenagh and the losers meet Mostrim to determine which two clubs are demoted to the Intermediate Championship.

The St Columba’s case was dealt with on Friday night in the Secretary’s office in Glennon Brothers Pearse Park and lasted over 3 hours in a bid to sort out the dilemma that is threatening to throw the major competition into disarray.

A counter appeal from Carrickedmond was also heard on Friday night so the entire affair is likely to drag on in the quest to break the deadlock.

Representatives from both clubs involved were in attendance at the hearing with St Columba’s adamant that they won the recent Group B clash at Leo Casey Park by a point, 2-12 to 2-11.

However, referee David Tiernan deemed on that dramatic evening in Ballymahon that the crunch fixture in the so called ‘group of death’ ended in a draw (2-12 to 2-12) but noted at the bottom of his report to the County Board that the scoreline should have stated: 2-12 to 2-11, and thus a win for Mullinalaghta.
