Down through the years the clash of Longford and Leitrim in the National Football League has always attracted a lot of interest and particularly significant is the latest meeting between the neighbouring counties in the push for promotion.
A big attendance is expected at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday (throw-in 2.30pm) and while Longford are currently behind Leitrim in the Division 4 table, a home win will change that situation with a couple of fixtures remaining in this competitive league.
Taking for granted that the table toppers Laois are going to be one of the teams moving up to Division 3 next season, a fierce battle has developed for the other promotion place and Paddy Christie’s charges are right back in contention with other results last weekend working in their favour.
While Longford had the comfortable margin of eight points to spare over London, the previously unbeaten Leitrim suffered a shattering setback with Carlow scoring a last gasp goal to come out on top by the minimum of margins at Netwatch Cullen Park.
It was a cruel blow for Andy Moran and his assistant manager Mickey Graham and the high profile mentors will be hoping to put things right in the eagerly awaited showdown against Longford.
Make no mistake about it, Leitrim will be hard beaten with Ryan O’Rourke and Darragh Rooney the main men in a strong attack despite the current absence of class act Keith Beirne.
