Mostrim upset the odds to defeat Clonguish and keep their own championship hopes alive at Leo Casey Park in Ballymahon on Sunday.
Mostrim . . . 3-9 Clonguish . . . 1-12
Edgeworthstown overcame a six-point deficit, having trailed by 1-6 to 0-3 after 21 minutes. A penalty late in the first half converted by Darragh Doherty brought them right back into the game and the sides were level at the break, at 1-6 apiece.
Mostrim were the better side in a hard fought second half and two goals from Tiarnan Hussey guided them to a vital victory.
Mostrim, who reached the 2021 county final, are backboned by some vastly experienced players and they have the firepower of Tiarnan Hussey and county player Darragh Doherty in attack.
For Clonguish’s young guns, this proved to be a harsh lesson in championship football. Their inexperience showed at times as a wily and physically stronger Mostrim drove on in the second half.
There was also a stormy end to the game, with Clonguish defender Gerry Moore being handed a straight red card for his part in a melee which developed.
