Mullinalaghta moved into pole position in Group 2 of the Division 1 senior football league after cruising to a comprehensive win over Slashers in the Round 7 clash at Michael Fay Park on Wednesday evening.

Mullinalaghta St Columba’s . . . 2-16   Longford Slashers . . . 0-8

The most emphatic wide margin of 14 points separated the sides in the finish and particularly impressive for the slick St Columba’s side under the guidance of new manager, Cavan native Ollie Fay, was lethal attacker James McGivney who clocked up a goal and four fabulous points in tormenting the Slashers defence.

The home side trailed by just three points at the break (0-8 to 0-5) but collapsed completely on the changeover in producing a very disappointing display in the build up to the start of the county championship at the end of July.

Both teams were without a number of regulars and while Mullinalaghta were missing key players John Keegan (long term injury), Rian Brady (gone to Australia) and Jayson Matthews (spending the summer in the United States), they were still too strong for Slashers whose most notable absentee was Tadhg McNevin (another of the many young players currently in America).
