In the aftermath of the heavy defeat (3-14 to 0-6) against Westmeath in the TG4 Ladies Football All-Ireland Intermediate Championship Round 2 game at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday last, Alan Mullen has made the decision to step down from his role as manager of the Longford squad.

Relegation from Division 3 of the National League was also a setback for the Westmeath native Mullen in his first season in charge of the midlanders in his efforts to build a team comprising a lot of young players during the current transition period.

It is understood that Longford Slashers clubman Sean Meenaghan, who coached Ballymore to win the Covid delayed 2020 Leinster Junior Club Championship title a couple of years ago, will manage the County team for the rest of the season - starting with the remaining All-Ireland Intermediate group stage fixture away to Antrim in Cargin on Sunday next, throw-in 2pm.

The following is a statement from Longford LGFA on the resignation of Alan Mullen:

‘Longford Ladies wish to advise that our county manager, Alan Mullen, has resigned with immediate effect.

Longford Ladies wish to sincerely thank and acknowledge Alan for his dedication and hard work with the 2023 ladies teams.

Alan was very unfortunate that 2023 was the year a large number of our long-playing ladies decided to retire, others decided to go travelling after Covid.

Girls are very focused when exams are in their futures so several girls would not commit. While every county has these problems, 2023 hit Longford hard with every element coming together.

For the last few years, the previous County managers would have been affected likewise, but in lesser numbers.

Alan was also subjected to the hurlers on the ditch. It is very easy to lift a pen or shout obscenities, I ask anyone to walk in Alan’s shoes for a week.

We wish Alan and his family every good wish for the future.’
