Longford Leader Editorial: Empathy with Paris

Leitrim crafted candleabras survive Notre Dame blaze

Fire at Notre Dame, Paris last night

‘Notre Dame in flames. Nine centuries of history brought crashing down in just 63 minutes’. The stark front page headline on Tuesday’s The Independent newspaper is one that certainly resonates with the people of Longford.

On Christmas morning 2009, Longfordians awoke to the devastating news that their beloved St Mel’s Cathedral had been ravaged and gutted by fire.

The sad images from the historic and iconic Notre Dame Cathedral on Monday evening prompted many Longford folk to take to social media platforms to empathise with shocked Parisians and the French nation.

A massive €30 million project saw St Mel’s Cathedral rebuilt and restored and it reopened on Christmas Eve 2014.
