In the first six months of this year, Longford drivers received 450 penalty points, bringing the running total of penalty points in the county to 5,572 (as at close of June). With a population of 34,391 (Census 2006), this equates to an average of 0.16 penalty points per person in the county.
Thankfully, this compares favourably to Dublin city and county where the figure stands at 1.5 penalty points per person; the worst recorded in the country. Kilkenny came second with just under one per person. Points remain on a valid driving licence for a period of three years and the figures, which have been obtained from the RSA website (www.rsa.ie), reflect total points less those which have expired at the end of their three year period.
