Meet the candidate: Granard Municipal District Grace Kearney (Independent)
Name: Grace Kearney
Occupation: Family Resource Centre Manager
Why have you decided to run in the Local Elections ?
Having worked in the community and voluntary sector for nearly 10 years I have experienced first hand the many difficulties facing communities.
I will be a strong, honest, transparent, independent voice.
Why should people vote for you?
*Proven track record working with communities, in particular children and families.
*Massive experience in applying for community funding
*Professionally qualified Community & Youth Worker, with a Psychology degree.
*Strong voice on issues affecting rural communities
*Passionate, hard working, enthusiastic
*First hand experience from our family business (Kearney’s Petrol Station) of the difficulties facing small businesses
What do you think is lacking in your area and what will you be campaigning for?
Voluntary Groups / Committees: I will work in solidarity with the various organisations and committees to help enhance their area/ club/ cause. I will do this by aiding with grant applications, supporting committee development, seeking extra funding/ resources and working side by side with them. Voluntary committees are the heartbeat of our community and they need to be nurtured and supported wholeheartedly.
Tourism: It is very important to continue to promote our area as a tourist hub, further investment is required throughout the district in order to develop the area to its full potential.
Businesses: Many businesses are struggling daily. I will strive to review the business rates and lobby on their behalf for fairer rates.
Businesses can only thrive if the conditions allow them to, thus it is paramount that the parking issue in Granard town is addressed immediately. There are other areas in the District that could be potential enterprise areas if supported and funded to grow effectively.
Youth Development/ Family Support: Young people are our future, there is mounting pressure being placed on young people and families.
I have first hand experience of working with families through severely tough times, an increase of funding for human resources is fundamental for families growth & development.
