Massive €900,000 funding boost for three local projects throughout Longford

This investment is through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme

Almost €900,000 has been allocated to projects in Longford, through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, which will deliver walking trails and amenities for people.

Longford Fine Gael TD Micheál Carrigy, who welcomed the funding boost on Monday, said it will make a significant positive difference to people within the county.

“This is more than just infrastructure, it will improve lives in Longford. These projects will give people greater access to nature, recreation and community spaces to support physical and mental wellbeing.”


“This announcement acts upon Fine Gael’s promise to connect communities, promote healthy lifestyles and protect Ireland’s natural heritage.”


The €895,846 in funding is in respect of Measures two and three of the scheme which provides funding of up to €500,000 for strategic repair and maintenance of existing facilities together with the development of new recreational infrastructure.

The three Longford projects approved are:


- Legga to Moyne Walking and Cycling Trail – development of a trail connecting Legga Cross to Moyne (€200,000),
- Lissard–Cranalagh More Green Trail, Edgeworthstown – development of a 4.2km walking and cycling trail (€200,000)
- Longford Trails Upgrade 2025 – Raising Standards Countywide – upgrade of 15 existing trails to national standards (€495,846).

Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD said he was delighted the funding was being provided.


"This investment will "further enhance these spaces which not only act as recreational and social spaces for our communities but also add greatly to our tourism sector.”


A total of €16.5m has been allocated to 63 projects around the country.
