The Mill Bar in Drumlish has been encouraging musicians and singers onto its stage in an encouraging and welcoming environment

Drumlish has always fostered its creative talent, offering opportunities to perform.

One of the spots that gives trad music a platform is the Mill Bar, which hosts a weekly session for musicians to come together in front of a supportive crowd.

During the Marquee in Drumlish weekend, the bar had a selection of talent to keep the village entertained beyond the venue, whilst also being the location where the festival’s launch night had taken place in August.

The Mill Bar has built up a good friendship with local, well known traditional legends of Irish music such as Noel Sweeney, Jimmy Breffiney and many more. They have a traditional, cosy atmosphere, traditional pub settings and welcome all musicians and singers of all ages.

Caroline Brady, who runs the Mill Bar with Owen Brady, came to chat about why local pubs are still an important part of helping music artists have the chance to showcase their skills.

“It is important for places like The Mill to get involved in showing support for all musicians and singers in a welcoming, friendly place to show their talent. We have built up a lovely atmosphere for all ages over the years and a great gathering of all ages to enjoy the music, chat and company.”

The Sunday nights have been a popular part of the bar’s entertainment. A group of trad musicians come together to play voluntarily in the main bar area, where the snooker tables would be.

“Yes, Drumlish is a great hub for traditional music as we have seen every Sunday evening over the last 8 years,” she said. “A mix of young and older musicians and singers come together to play music. There is a wide range of talent around Drumlish and Ballinamuck, and surrounding areas.”

The bar has also been supportive of charity, as the attraction of their local talent has helped with fundraising. However, musicians can be anyone–they are not limited to the same, and the bar encourages new faces to come.

“We welcome all sorts of performers to build confidence. We do a monthly karaoke night which the locals enjoy and love to get involved in. We have a karaoke competition starting in November in aid of St Luke’s, which I know will be well supported as Drumlish has fantastic community support.”
