A major holiday resort is to open in Newcastle Woods in Ballymahon creating over 500 jobs for the area.
The €300 million investment by Center Parcs, aUK and European based holiday company is expected to create several hundred jobs both during construction and upon its completion.
The proposed development will be the biggest private tourist investment in Ireland and will attract visitors from all over the country to south Longford.
The proposed development will be based in Ballymahon’s Newcastle Woods, providing families and visitors with holidays in a forest-based setting. Longford County Council has beaten off competition from a number of other locations around the country to secure the investment and it is understood that negotiations on the plan between the council, Coillte and Center Parcs have been taking place for over a year.
It is understood that county councillors were briefed on the project yesterday morning by members of the executive of Longford County Council.
Speaking to the Leader yesterday morning, Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council, Cllr Mark Casey said: “This is the single biggest private tourist investment we have ever seen.
“You will never see anything like this again in Ireland.”
