Macra na Feirme ‘Know Your Neighbour Weekend’ takes place on July 13 and 14 next.
Now in its 8th year, the event aims to bring neighbours together so that they can get to know eachother better and socialise in a safe and fun environment.
“Recent times of crisis have demonstrated the strength of support and friendship that neighbours can provide,” Macra’s national president Kieran O’Dowd said. “Those living closest to you may be the first people you seek out when times are hard. The ongoing fodder crisis has put all farmers under pressure and created a sense of helplessness and hopelessness. I have heard many heartwarming stories from communities where neighbours have pulled together to share fodder and therefore share the burden.”
Macra is currently calling on people and community groups to hold a Know Your Neighbour event such as a coffee morning, BBQ, themed party, sports day or a field day. “It will provide an opportunity for neighbours to get together in a fun and informal environment,” Mr O’Dowd continued. “Taking the time to build these relationships will ensure that people have a support network that they may rely on now, or in the future.” Those interested in holding an event can find more information on www.knowyourneighbour.ie where event ideas, tips and resources can be downloaded.
