There is a request to install a speed ramp at Sli na Moinear, Moydow, and a bus shelter at Magiff’s crossroads

A Lanesboro-based councillor has called on the local authority to install a speed ramp at Sli na Moinear, Moydow to improve safety and he has also requested that a bus shelter is erected at Magiff’s crossroads.

Independent representative Mark Casey submitted the two part motion at last week’s monthly meeting of Ballymahon Municipal District.

Cllr Casey said about 100-metres inside the housing estate there is an 'awful long stretch of road' and he believes a speed ramp would be a big help to help to reduce speed.

“There are kids going across to play in the green area and numerous people from the area have contacted me about it and they are very concerned that someone is going to get hurt there.”

The first part of the motion was seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Paul Ross.

Senior Executive Engineer Brian McNeela said Longford County Council will consider the request in accordance with Longford County Council’s traffic calming policy.

“Traffic speeds in this estate will be monitored and if a speed issue is confirmed we will consider appropriate traffic calming measures and we will consider this location for future low-cost safety scheme funding.”

Cllr Casey also highlighted the bus shelter at Magiff’s crossroads as the second part of his motion on traffic management and it was seconded by Cllr Pat O'Toole.

“With the new local link and the amount of kids they pick up from school there every morning there is definitely a need and there is room for a bus shelter in the area.

“It’s not fair to tell them to wait around when it’s raining and children rushing to be there at the end of school term.

“Between the local link and the school drop off there is definitely a need for a bus shelter.”

“I know there is a review of the bus shelters across the county at the moment because several times I have put in a motion in relation to Ballymahon and the bus shelter.

“I think it’s Bus Éireann and the council are in collaboration on that so I presume this will be taken into consideration at that time as well.”

Senior Executive Engineer at Longford County Council, Brian McNeela read a response from the local authority.

“The NTA are the authority that plan with the provision of bus stop facilities and fund these facilities.

“Longford County Council will liaise with the NTA and explore the feasibility of installing a shelter at this location as part of the Bus Stop Enhancement Programme.”
