Get your walking gear ready for this May Bank Holiday Weekend for some free family outdoor fun in Longford.
County Longford Tourism will be hosting its inaugural Longford Walking Festival this May Bank Holiday weekend, with a programme of walking events organised for Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4.
This great festival has been designed to suit all levels of walkers from casual low level walks to the more experienced.
Led by Alex Stanley and his team from Outdoor Discovery, the walks are all free of charge and promises to be great fun for people of all ages, with walks ranging from Woodland and Bog Walks to Treasure Hunt and Family Activities.
The Festival kicks off on Saturday, May 3 with a welcome reception and registration at 10am in Derrycasson Woods.
The Derrycasson Woods Walk is suitable for everyone young and old, and will be a great excuse to visit Derrycasson for anyone who hasn’t yet had the opportunity to visit this hidden Longford gem. The walking activities continue on Saturday, May 3 at 2pm, with a two hour guided Environmental Walk in Edenmore Bog, Ballinamuck, facilitated by local experts and Alex Stanley of Longford based Outdoor Discovery.
Edenmore Bog boasts a fabulous nature reserve and various examples of indigenous plant and animal life and is well worth a visit for any nature enthusiast.
The fun continues on Sunday, May 4 in Newcastle Woods, Ballymahon for the Longford Festival’s Walk and Treasure Hunt. This guided walk in Newcastle Woods is suitable for all age groups and the Treasure Hunt is sure to be a hit with younger walkers, so please be sure to bring out the whole family on the day.
Finally, the Longford Walking Festival Grand Finale will take place at 2pm on Sunday in Clondra for a Canal Walk and Family Fun Day, with a range of (free of charge) child-friendly activities provided by Outdoor Discovery Adventure Company.
The Co Longford Walking Festival promises to be a wonderful opportunity to check out the fantastic walks available to everyone year-round in Co Longford. All festival walks are free of charge.
The project is promoted by the County Longford Tourism Committee and assisted by Longford Community Resourced Limited through the Rural Development Programme, which is part financed by the European Union and the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government.
