The figures were obtained by Sinn Féin health spokesperson David Cullinane following a parliamentary question that he submitted to the Minister for Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.

Occupational therapy services promote independence and help people of all ages gain, regain, or improve the independence they need for everyday activities and meaningful tasks.

Nationally there are a total if 1,317 children awaiting an initial assessment.

There are 36 children waiting for a year or more in the Galway-Roscommon region and three kids waiting for an initial assessment in the Sligo-Leitrim region.

Some occupational therapy support can involve things such as teaching patients how to dress, bathe, groom, and eat independently, practicing household tasks like cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping.
