It's a case of battening down the hatches this afternoon as Longford and the nation at large braces itself for the most devastating storm to hit Irish shores in recent memory.

Members of the public are being advised to stay indoors and not venture out after 4pm today following confirmation that a Status Red weather warning has been extended across the country.

In light of those warnings, the Leader braved the icy conditions earlier this morning to catch a glimpse of how the wintry conditions have left many parts of the county in virtual lockdown mode.

Here are a few shots taken in Granard along with a few images sent in by reader, one of which captured treacherous road conditions along the main Granard to Ballinalee road.
