Musical season has well and truly kicked off in Longford following a variety of spectacular performances from members of St. Mel's Musical Society and the Evolution Stage School last Thursday and Friday nights.

The two talented groups joined together for the 'Night On Broadway' event which saw tickets for both nights completely sell out.

The event itself was held to raise funds for this year's St. Mel's Musical Society production, 'Sister Act', which will see Janice Gibney and Paul Hennessy take to the stage in the lead roles of Dolores and Curtis.

Audiences were even treated to a small slice of what's to come in April when talented Painted Skies member, Mary Ann Lynch, stepped into her character of Sister Mary Robert and performed a stunning rendition of 'The Life I Never Led'.

The show opened with an outstanding set - Rock of Ages - by Evolution Stage School, which saw the students sing and dance their way through various memorable rock songs.

What followed was a litany of performances from top musicals such as 'Matilda', 'Chicago', 'Legally Blonde', 'Cats', 'Blues Brothers', 'Les Miserable', 'Jekyll and Hyde', and many more, including a few Disney numbers from 'Moana', 'Aladdin' and 'The Lion King'.

In total, the cast of Night on Broadway sang and danced their way through 25 different musicals.

“We are thrilled with the audience reaction to A Night On Broadway,” said Paul Hennessy who, along with Tracey Carty, organised last week's fundraising event.

“Everyone worked so hard to get the show to the high standard and the hard work paid off.

“It was great to see St Mel’s MS members and the Evolution students sharing the stage as we worked our way through 25 musicals.

“Myself and Tracey are very grateful for the commitment and dedication shown by everyone in the show.

“And of course St Mel’s Musical Society are more than grateful to the public who supported the two sellout shows and raised funds for their April 2018 production ‘Sister Act’.”

St. Mel's Musical Society will stage a total of nine performances of 'Sister Act' in the Backstage Theatre.

The show will take place nightly from April 20 to 28.
