A major cycling fundraiser to generate funds for the Longford branch of Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland will take place in Carrickboy in September.

The event will also see the former Red Alert band reform for one night only when celebrations kick off later that night in the marquee.

The 10 km family cycle fundraiser which is being spearheaded by Derek Kelly and his father Tom is being held on Saturday, September 5 next in an effort to raise some much needed funds for the Longford Branch of MS.

Derek’s mother, Marie suffers from the illness and the family want to pay back the organisation in some small way for all the help and support that Marie has received.

Proceedings kick off at 2:30pm at Casey’s pub in Carrickboy and will be supported by the Order of Malta and marshals on the day. Refreshments will also be served.

From 4pm onwards there will be a BBQ and later that night two bands will entertain the crowds.

First off will be the Tommy Kelly Blues Band and this will be followed by the reformed Red Alert, which Derek was a member of.

The band will be together on the night for the first time in six years.

There will also be loads of spot prizes and a great day and nights entertainment is guaranteed.

Speaking to the Leader, Derek said it was a fundraiser that he had wanted to do for some time and is thrilled to have finally gotten there.

“When I was in Red Alert we did a lot of charity gigs, so this is something that I have wanted to do for a while,” he added.

“We are looking forward to reforming on the night and we want this to be a fun event for everybody, no matter what age, to enjoy.”

Sponsorship cards are available from Derek and Tom and more information will be available closer to the time.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their help and support in organising this,” continued Derek.

“Special thanks to Gerry Conboy, Echo Sound & Vision; Patrick Rhatigan; Longford Tool Hire; Mollaghan’s Butchers, Longford; Innyside Filling Station, Ballymahon; Ollie Colgan Butchers, Ballymahon; Rapid Print, Longford and all the boys in the bands.

“We guarantee a fun day out for all the family and lots of entertainment along the way as well. We hope to raise as much as we can for the Longford Branch of MS.”
