Longford motorists urged to be vigilant as temperature dips

Longford motorists are being urged to be vigilant as frost, fog and ice is an issue on roads across the country this morning.

An earlier collision has been cleared from the Newtownforbes/ Drumlish Rd near Briskill Cross.

Gardai are reporting frosty road conditions in the following areas, particularly on secondary routes: Carlow, Portlaoise, Tullamore, Carrick-on-Shannon, Castlebar and Ennis.

There is also frost in the towns of Cavan, Roscommon and Longford and in Limerick and Galway Cities.

It's also very foggy around Sligo Town, Carrick-on-Shannon, Letterkenny, Cavan Town, Monaghan Town, Thurles and Tralee. Use your fog lights in affected areas but turn them off when no longer needed.

Temperatures have dipped as low as -5 in some places.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange Weather Warning for dense fog in Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal. This warning is valid until 10am today (Friday, November 25) with freezing fog also expected in patches. Slow down, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you and use your fog lights in affected areas, but remember to turn them off afterwards.

In addition, a Status Orange Low Temperature Warning has been issued for Donegal and Mayo, with a Status Yellow Low Temperature Warning for the rest of Connacht, Munster, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal, valid until 10am today (November 25). Ice or frost can be expected on secondary routes in particular. Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.

Incidents

LONGFORD: A collision has been cleared from the Newtownforbes/ Drumlish Rd near Briskill Cross.

LEITRIM: A stop/go system is in place for ongoing works on the N16 Sligo/ Enniskillen Rd on the Manorhamilton side of Glenfarne village until approx. March 2017. Expect delays.

Roadworks

ROSCOMMON: The N61 Boyle/Roscommon Rd is closed in parts between Boyle and Tulsk until approx. Thurs 22nd Dec. Diversions via Frenchpark and local access will be maintained.

WESTMEATH: Works are underway on the N52 Mullingar/ Kells Rd between Cloghan and Turin until approx. Sept 2017. The speed limit on this route has been reduced to 50 km/ h for the duration of the works.
