Members of the public with ideas aimed at developing community based jobs and services in Longford have been invited to a novel brainstorming get together next week.

The title of the event, ‘Identifying Opportunities’ is to take place at the EDI centre, Longford on Saturday, April 28 next, from 10am to 1pm.

The meeting is part of the roll-out of Social Enterprise Longford (SEL), a pioneering new programme to promote community development and jobs throughout the county.

Following on from three initial information meetings held in the lead up to Easter in Longford, Granard and Lanesboro, more than half the available places have been filled.

Among the many projects already identified include catering, recycling, caring, clothing, childcare and conservation.

Jennifer Hennessy, one of the event’s main organisers said, a number of other potential project areas have yet to be filled, ranging from the likes of tourism to technology and heritage.

“We have a number of proposals in the tourism area but we would like to hear further suggestions in order to develop a comprehensive and sustainable proposal for a community-based tourism initiative in the county,” she said.

“We also believe community-based renewable energy projects have a big potential in Longford, given the county’s long association with power and fuel generation.”

In order to extract the full benefit from the event, ideas from both urban and rural areas around the county are being sought after.

“People will be helped to identify local assets and opportunities and helped explore what has worked elsewhere and you will be guided through the maze of funding applications. Most of all, community groups will be assisted to earn income from trading activity,” she continued.

The ‘Identifying Opportunities’ public seminar takes place on Sat. April 28 from 10am – 1pm at the EDI Centre, Longford. Information is also available on the dedicated SEL website on www.SocialEnterprise.ie/Longford.
