From August 1-31, under-18’s will be able to visit free of charge a wide range of historic and cultural attractions across Ireland.

With the kids off school for the summer, there’s no better time for a day trip.

From August 1-31, under-18’s will be able to visit dozens of Ireland's historic and cultural attractions free of charge.

The new initiative, which was announced today by Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, applies to a wide range of participating OPW heritage sites across the country, including historic houses, castles, archaeological sites and gardens. The full list can be found on the Heritage Ireland website.

The initiative aims to encourage young people and families to explore Ireland's cultural heritage during the summer holidays while making visits to historic sites more affordable.

Announcing the initiative, Minister Moran said he was pleased to once again offer free admission for under-18s throughout August.

"Whether it's exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland's cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays."

Among the sites highlighted by the OPW are Castletown House in Kildare, Barryscourt Castle in Cork, Emo Court in Laois, Céide Fields in Mayo and Ilnacullin (Garinish Island) in Cork. Tickets for some of the heritage sites can be booked online in advance.

Families can also access a range of suggested travel itineraries to help plan day trips or longer excursions during August.
