The event ‘With Pen & Paper: An Afternoon of Letter Writing,’ on November 1, in Maria Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown, offers a chance to read letters received from around the world

MARIA Edgeworth Centre in Edgeworthstown is inviting locals to connect with people around the world at a free afternoon of letter writing.

The event ‘With Pen & Paper: An Afternoon of Letter Writing,’ on Sunday, November 1, offers a chance to read letters received from around the world through the Sunday Letter Project and, if you wish, write a reply of your own.

Janine Roder, who initiated the Maria Edgeworth Centre’s connection with the Sunday Letter Project, hopes the event will encourage people to slow down and rediscover the pleasure of handwritten correspondence.

“We live in such a fast-paced world that I think we sometimes forget to slow down and take time for ourselves and for others. There’s something really special about sitting down with a pen and paper, taking a moment to gather your thoughts and writing to someone you’ve never met,” said Janine.

"I love the idea that a letter written here in Edgeworthstown could travel across the world and bring two people together. I hope this afternoon will encourage people to rediscover the simple pleasure of letter writing and perhaps even make a new friend along the way.

The event also reflects the literary legacy of Maria Edgeworth, the celebrated Irish writer who lived and worked in Edgeworthstown and was a prolific letter writer. Her extensive correspondence offers a glimpse into the people, ideas and everyday experiences of her time.

With handwritten correspondence becoming less common, the Centre hopes the afternoon will offer a welcoming space for people to step away from busy routines, gather their thoughts and enjoy the simple act of writing by hand.

Tea and writing materials will be provided, with time to write, reflect and enjoy a friendly chat. Whether you are an experienced letter writer or have not written a letter by hand in years, everyone is welcome.

The Maria Edgeworth Visitor Centre is supported by The Heritage Council. Admission is free, but advance registration is required as places are limited.
