Here are the dramatic scenes taken by a motorist in north Longford after a night of sub zero temperatures left large parts of the county covered in a thick blanket of snow.
Several schools were forced to close while a number of events due to be held today had to be postponed or cancelled as the first snow and ice deluge of 2019 hit home.
A status yellow snow and ice warning remains in place for Ireland until Saturday, with showers of hail, sleet and snow forecast.
This video, captured by a motorist earlier today, illustrated the kind of conditions many Longford motorists faced as they made their way to work.
The worst may be yet to come with Met Éireann warning that "bitterly cold" conditions are still on the way in the lead up to this weekend.
