VIDEO: Witness appeal as gardai launch Longford murder investigation

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward after a man was fatally injured during an a stabbing incident in Longford town yesterday.

Superintendent Jim Delaney confirmed a murder investigation was now underway following the incident in Longford town just before midday yesterday.

Gardai have not yet released the identity of the victim at this stage due to the fact the man's next of kin have still to be informed.

Supt Delaney however, did reveal the man was aged 31, from Poland and had been living in the Longford area for some time.

He also confirmed detectives have extended the detention time of a 24 year old man who was arrested yesterday afternoon.

He is currently being detained at Longford Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He can be questioned until shortly after 9:30pm tonight when he must be either charged or released.

A number of searches were carried out in the Longford area yesterday, Supt Delaney confirmed, but for operational reasons declined to comment on what clues, if any, they produced.

He did though, confirm that the victim was attacked as he walked up Great Water Street and along Rue Noyal Chetillon Street by a man wearing a blue tracksuit top with a thin red stripe down the sleeve, grey tracksuit bottoms and runners.
