WATCH: Longford publican enters race to become new Late Late Show host

Longford publican Eddie Valentine has blown the race to become the new host of RTÉ's The Late Late Show wide open by officially declaring his interest in the position.

The renowned Longford businessman put his name forward for arguably the most sought after role on Irish television in a video taken from inside the bar of his main street establishment this afternoon.

In the brief clip, Mr Valentine can be seen giving the thumbs up to the camera before boldly stating: "Eddie J Valentine, applying for the Late, Late Show host, alright Tubridy."

It comes after a number of bookmakers suspended betting on Patrick Kielty being named as Ryan Tubridy's successor.

The Co Down presenter became favourite after Claire Byrne and Sarah McInerney both ruled themselves out of the running.

News of Mr Valentine's unexpected and late entry into the race is expected to add much intrigue locally as RTÉ bosses look to make an official announcement ahead of Mr Tubridy's departure on May 26.
