Longford Leader reporter Deniese O’Flaherty speaks to Longford Town FC manager Tony Cousins following the first leg of the promotion play-offs against Mervue United at Fahy’s Field on Friday night.
Cousins’ side are trailing 0-1 after the game, as Jason Molloy’s first half strike for Mervue proved to be the difference between the two sides.
It could have been worse for the Town, though, after captain Corie Treacey saw red in the 26th minute for showing his studs in a tackle, but the ten men held out, and could have sneaked a draw in the dying moments as Gary Shaw rose saw his header crash against the crossbar.
Longford Town will now host Mervue United at City Calling Stadium at 7.45pm this Friday evening in the return leg of the fixture, with the winners going on to play a two-legged tie against the team that finishes second last in the Airtricity League Premier Division. The winners of that encounter will secure Premier Division status for the 2014 season.
