Longford Gardaí will be conducting a crackdown on speeding drivers today Monday, August 31.

Longford Gardaí will be carrying out a 24-hour speed enforcement operation today Monday, August 31, as part of the nationwide #SlowDown Day.

The initiative, which began at midnight last night, aims to promote safer driving, reduce speed-related collisions and encourage motorists to comply with speed limits.

There will also be a particular focus on traffic activity around schools at opening and closing times, as the operation coincides with the first full week of schools reopening across the country.

National #SlowDown Days are held several times throughout the year to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding and deter and detect dangerous driving behaviour.

Gardaí have stressed that excessive speed can reduce a driver's ability to respond to unexpected hazards and increase the likelihood of losing control of a vehicle.

The National #SlowDown Day campaign will end at midnight tonight.
