Former GAA footballer and retired teacher, Peter Duignan, sadly passed away on Friday, July 24.
Longford GAA club Fr Manning Gaels have paid tribute to their former member, club great Peter Duignan, who sadly passed away last Friday, July 24.

A respected and much-admired figure in local GAA circles, Peter, who was formerly of Ballinamuck, County Longford and Fenagh, County Leitrm, was remembered as a talented player, coach and mentor who made a lasting contribution to GAA in Longford and beyond right throughout his life.
Beyond his own playing achievements, he was also recognised for his commitment to developing young players and promoting Gaelic games among future generations.
In paying tribute to their former member, Fr Manning Gaels described Peter as an outstanding player who enjoyed success with the club during the 1950s and 60s.

Posting on their Facebook page, the club wrote, “Peter was an outstanding player for our club in the late 1950s and 60s, winning two prestigious Feis Cups and reaching two county finals, in 1961 and 1966.”
“His teaching profession brought him to St Felims in Ballinamore and he was part of the Seán O’Heslins side which won three senior championships in a row from 1967 to 1969 and which reached the Connacht club championship final for 1968, which ended in defeat at the hands of Castlerea.”
They added, “Developing youth was a passion of Peter’s and he was the driving force behind the Longford-Leitrim Corn Breifne schools competition, which many of our clubmen will fondly remember from their Moyne days. Peter’s son Ciarán went on to represent Fenagh and Leitrim with distinction for many years in the 90s and 00s and our thoughts and prayers are with the Duignan family at this difficult time. Solas na bhFlaitheas air”
Longford Golf Club also paid tribute to Peter, writing on their Facebook page, “The club is saddened to hear of the passing of former club member Peter Duignan who is also father of our club professional Pete. We send our deepest sympathies to Pete, Peters wife Martha and all of the Duignan family on their sad loss. May he rest in peace.”
