Longford Community Games: Proud Cian O'Byrne wins Pat Carthy Cup

Cian O’Byrne with the ‘Pat Carthy Cup’.

Legan/Ballycloughan were delighted to present Cian O’Byrne as this year's winner of the ‘Pat Carthy Cup’ for his achievements in Community Games.

Cian won gold at last year's county finals in U-12 long puck & went on to represent Legan/Longford in the National Finals in August.

Pat Carthy, along with his wife Mary, were both great advocates and indeed committee members in Legan/Ballycloughan Community games for years.

Pat was always there to help out any way he could, be it holding the rope at our field day to driving competitors to events. He also served on the committee. His son Patrick Jnr was a great participant in community games in the parish.

He got to the All Ireland quiz and also was a great athlete on the field representing Legan/Ballycloughan in 1500 metres and in the relay in Mosney.

After Pat passed away in December 2005 they committee decided to name a cup after Pat and each year this cup was presented to a worthy participant. The first year was 2006. Each year a different area was chosen e.g one year for an outstanding athlete, another for a budding artist or indeed for all-around participation.

Legan/Ballycloughan were very lucky and honoured to have worked along with Pat over the years and well done Cian on his achievements.
