Top athlete visiting Longford: Fionnuala McCormack will be star attraction in Abbeyshrule on Sunday

European Cross Country Championship gold medal winner Fionnuala McCormack will attend the fourth annual Abbeyshrule 5/10k Run / Family Walk on Sunday next, June 12 at 11.30am.
On behalf of the organisers, James Byrne, confirmed, “We are delighted to announce that Fionnuala McCormack will be attending Sunday's run and it will be her final event in Ireland before the European Athletics Championships in July and onwards to Rio 2016.”
Mr Byrne added, “Come Run/Walk with us on Sunday and wish Fionnuala the very best on her Road to Rio!”
Fionnuala McCormack (née Britton) was a gold medallist at the 2011 and 2012 European Cross Country Championships.
She has represented Ireland in the steeplechase at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics, the 2007 World Championships in Athletics and 2011 World Championships in Athletics, and twice at the European Athletics Championships.
Organised by Abbeyshrule Canoe Club, participants can register for the Abbeyshrule 5/10k Run / Family Walk from 10am at The Rustic Inn or online at
The course is AAI measured and it is a bonus race in the Go Active Ireland Run 32 Counties Challenge. Indeed, athletes can earn a 10 point bonus by taking part. Check out for more information.

“We invite everyone to come along and avail of the opportunity to run/walk in one of Ireland's tidiest villages, Abbeyshrule and also to meet top class athlete Fionnuala McCormack,” said Mr Byrne.
The cost of registration for the Abbeyshrule 5/10k Run / Family Walk is - Run €10 each entry/Walk €10 or €20 per family.
Proceeds from this year’s event are going to Abbeyshrule Canoe Club and Carrickedmond GAA Club.
