Champions Longford march on to O’Byrne Cup Final with hard earned victory over Meath

Defending champions Longford are through to the 2024 Leinster GAA Dioralyte O’Byrne Cup decider where they will face  Dublin at O'Moore Park Portlaoise this Saturday, January 20, throw-in 3pm (live on TG4). 

It will be Longford's 11th O'Byrne Cup Final appearance and their 4th time to feature in the final in the last ten years. They will be bidding for a fifth title, having been previously crowned champions in 1965, 2000, 2020 and 2023.

First half goals by Jayson Matthews and Darren Gallagher helped Paddy Christie's side to a hard earned 2-14 to 1-14 victory over Colm O'Rourke's Meath in the semi-final in Ashbourne on Friday night last.  

Man of the Match Keelin McGann and the vastly experienced Michael Quinn impressed as Longford followed up impressively on their win over Westmeath last Saturday. 

Jayson Matthews scored the first goal for Longford in the 15th minute, the opening score for the visitors.

A strong finish to the first half, including a goal from Darren Gallagher, following a terrific team move, left Longford leading by 2-6 to 0-8 at the break.

Meath scorers: D Moriarty (1-4); C Finnegan (0-6, 4f); K Curtis (1 free), D Rowe, D Dixon & J O’Connor (0-1 each).
