Changes to Community Games: As mentioned last week, there are many changes to Community Games for 2013. National Finals will take place over two weekends instead of three, some activities that were traditionally summer events have been moved to the winter programme and vice versa. The List of Events has now been uploaded to the Community Games website, so it is recommended that everyone involved with the organisation familiarise themselves with the list. New activities have been introduced, other activities have been discontinued and there are several changes to age categories. There are also considerable changes to many activity rules, all of which are also available on the website. Please ensure that all managers are aware of the rules for each activity. The community Games website can be accessed at

Calendar of Events 2013: The Calendar of Events for 2013 is now available on the Blog and will be published here in due course. Please note that dates and venues are subject to change, so please keep an eye on the Blog at

National Awards: Members of our committee were presented with a national award in recognition of our areas participation in the most events in county Longford. This marks another great year for our area as we also received this award last year. Congratulations to all our young people and our hard working committee and volunteers, you have all surpassed yourselves and are very deserving of this award.

AGM: A reminder to parents and volunteers that our area AGM is on Wednesday 28th November starting at 8pm in GAA Clubhouse. We really need your help this year. Community Games helps children to experience new sporting and cultural events as well as a great social outlet for parents. Friends made through community games are friends for life.

Art & Model Making: A quick reminder to all our young artists in the area that our competitions for 2013 are being held over this coming weekend. This Friday, 6-9pm, in GAA Clubhouse, we are calling on boys & girls U8, 10, 12, 14, & 16 to take part in our Art competition. Paper will be provided but bring your own colours etc. Theme is any community games sports or cultural event. This rule will be strictly adhered to this year by judges.

On this Saturday 10am-1pm in Clubhouse its the turn of our model makers. Boys & Girls U8,10,12,14,&16. Please bring ALL own materials. You can compete in both art & model making. Parents please take note that this year parents are NOT allowed to remain with their children during the competitions. This is in the interest of fairness and we would ask  for your understanding and co operation in this matter. Results will be available as soon as possible.

Draughts: We will have news of our draughts teams progress in next week’s notes.

Finally, Hard luck to Ballymahon/Forgney U-21’s on their defeat in the County Final on Sunday last. Most of the lads have been former games competitors but they are quite a young team and we are sure their day will come. Well done lads for getting to the final from all at Community Games.

The final frontier: Weekend away: Esker Hills, Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The final outing of the 2012 season took in the Esker Hills Golf Course just outside Tullamore. Frosty yet sunny conditions assured tee times were delayed so refuge was taken in the clubhouse for a spell. Teeing off on the sunny 12th closest to the clubhouse, there was plenty of quality golf played, notably Paddy Lee and Sean Moran posting high scores but it was Colm Hughes with 40 points taking the honours and Captain’s Prize with real consistency throughout the round. Colm also winning Group 2 and nearest the pin on the tricky Par 3 with Eugene Murphy leading home Group 3. Prizes were presented to the winners after a tasty meal and several pints of Miwadi! Following this the committee for 2013 season were elected. Mark McGoldrick elected Captain, Paddy Lee Secretary and Robbie Browne Treasurer. A big thanks to the outgoing team of Thomas, Mark and Eddie.

On Sunday the course was tackled for a second time but in scramble format. Five teams teed off on a wet and cold day, luckily buggies kept us reasonable dry (although rumours surfaced that an Evil Knievel type stunt was attempted by none other than Billy Cribben, setting out to prove that these buggies are well balanced and can leak, his theory proved correct although Donnacha wasn’t as confident and decided to bail out). The team shining through by a large margin on the day was Donnacha Prendergast, Thomas Brady, Frankie Courtney and Billy Cribben. The presentation followed accompanied by a welcome meal and plenty of chips available for all. A big thanks to the staff at Esker Hills for a warm welcome and great hospitality over both days.

Winners from Saturday’s Round: Captain’s Prize Winner: Colm Hughes. Group 1 Winners: 1st Paddy Lee. 2nd Sean Moran. Group 2 Winners: 1st Colm Hughes. 2nd Thomas Brady. Group 3 Winners: 1st Eugene Murphy. 2nd Mick Dunne. Nearest to the Pin: Colm Hughes.

Scramble Winners: 1st Team: Donnacha Prendergast, Thomas Brady, Frankie Courtney and Billy Cribben. Nearest to the Pin: Declan Rowley.
