Longford Town left St Colman’s Park on Friday night with nothing to show for a determined display as Cobh Ramblers collected all three points in Round 26 of the Airtricity League First Division.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a header from striker Jack Larkin finding the back of the net and the solitary goal settled the issue as luckless Longford fell to a fourth consecutive defeat.

One of those negative results was the 6-0 hammering that was suffered against Premier Division opponents Galway United in the recent FAI Cup clash at Eamonn Deacy Park.

With Kerry FC picking up a point in the 3-3 draw against Athlone, the gap at the bottom of the table has been extended but Wayne Groves will be hoping that his demoralised team can get a boost against Treaty United at Bishopsgate on Saturday August 10th.

Ten league fixtures remain (six at home) and the Town badly need a win against the Limerick club in the fierce battle to catch Kerry who are currently four points clear of the midlanders.

It might well have been a different story against the promotion play-off contenders Cobh but for a crucial reflex save by the home keeper Darragh Burke on the goal-line just before the break.

That was a close call for Cobh who created chances on the changeover before they eventually scored with the unmarked Jack Larkin hitting the target with his header.

Longford pressed in search of the equaliser during the remainder of the match but it failed to materialise as they suffered their 15th defeat in the league this season.

COBH RAMBLERS: Darragh Burke; Michael McCarthy (Tiernan O’Brien 61 mins), Cian Browne, Breandán Frahill, Matthew McKevitt (Regix Madika 72 mins), Jack Larkin, James O’Leary (David Bosnjak 72 mins), Nolan Evers, Dale Holland, Luka Le Bervet, Jason Abbott.
