Political activist Dave Smyth has been selected as the Longford Municipal District candidate for People Before Profit (PBP) in the June 7 local elections.

Dave has been a political activist for over thirty years and a member of PBP for over eight years, campaigning on and supporting many pertinent issues such as housing for all, marriage equality, abolition of water charges, proper public healthcare, Repeal of the 8th amendment, anti-war movements and so much more.

Dave (pictured right) is a broadcast engineer and he lives in Newtownforbes with his wife Barbara and they have three adult children.

Mr Smyth said, “I have been very vocal in my beliefs and my criticisms of our current establishment system for many years and I believe now is the correct time for me to step up to the plate and seek election to our county council to work for the long overdue changes that I believe we can and should be fighting to achieve here.”

He added, “All over Ireland, county councillors are totally and utterly frustrated with the current situation. They are being bogged down in red tape and political standoffs with each other. Councillors are elected to serve their constituents' needs. I want to find out what the real obstacles are. I want to find solutions and find new, better ways to get things done.”

Mr Smyth believes it’s time for real and meaningful change. “Fine Fáil and Fine Gael are out of touch and out of time. They have had 100 years of power and dominance, they have created chaos across the country. That needs to end, both locally and nationally.”
