The German Ambassador to Ireland, Deike Potzel, visited the B. Braun CAPS (Central Admixture Pharmacy Services) facility in Longford last Thursday afternoon.

CAPS Longford was established in 2008 producing intravenous nutrition products for immediate supply to Irish hospitals and patients at home.

“It was a pleasure to have Deike Potzel with us. B. Braun has been in Ireland for almost 40 years. It’s important to us to keep German-Irish relationships strong,” remarked Urs Kneubuehler, Plant Manager, B. Braun Hospicare Ltd.

Intravenous Nutrition, also known as Parenteral Nutrition (PN), is the supply of liquid, sterile food directly into the veins of patients whose digestive tract is not working well enough to absorb enough nutrients to keep them well.

In some patients the gut may not be working at all, either temporarily or permanently. In these situations, all of the nutritional requirements of the patient must be supplied intravenously. The therapy is then called Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).

CAPS products are supplied refrigerated and sterile in IV bags on a next day basis, to Irish hospitals and home patients and, contain all the ingredients including Vitamins and Trace Elements, necessary for life.

The value of such local production has recently been thrown into sharp focus, as the Irish Government has identified these products as one of 24 critically important classes of medicines on a “watch list” to be monitored carefully as part of its Brexit contingency strategy.

The Ambassador gained an insight into the challenges companies like B. Braun have to prepare for in the future and their role in improving Irish healthcare.

“I was most impressed by the work done at B. Braun and congratulate everyone on the continued success and expansion of the business in Ireland. “Thank you very much for having me, showing me around and sharing most helpful insights with me. All the best for everyone at B. Braun,” said Ambassador Potzel.
